Emily + Dalton ~ Hitched! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/9/emily-dalton-hitched Emily + Dalton ~ Hitched!

Two engagement sessions and a beautiful wedding later, I'm proud to call these two my friends :)  This was the first wedding I have ever photographed that got rained out!  Gleason park has some beautiful locations for ceremonies but with planner Sarah's help, we were able to move it inside and still have a beautiful experience under twinkling lights and a chandelier.  After the ceremony, the rain let up to a light drizzle and we were able to accomplish all of our portraits outside, yay!!  Emily also let me play with my lights and we got back out there after the reception to take some fun 'in the dark' bridal portraits.  I love Emily's choice in colors, blue and yellow.  Even their rings and ring box match perfectly.  As usual, I tried the cake... DELISH!  I always love working with Michael from DJ Master Key :)  and Kelly's cuisine was just a room full of sweet people.  This was also my first time working with my new assistant/2nd shooter, Jenn!  Boy is it awesome to not have to hold up a light stand with my foot at the same time as I take a picture in the dark.  I also LOVE the alternate angles she took!!  Without further ado, Emily and Dalton's vendor recipe and a selection of my favorites from their story...  CONGRATULATIONS EMILY AND DALTON!!!

Laundry Room Renovation! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/9/laundry-room-renovation Laundry Room Renovation!

How's this for some before pictures!?  Don't you love the peeling wallpaper, dated cabinetry, and nasty floor!?  I love that there was storage in the space but I obviously needed a little more to help me get organized.  At first I was going to give it a spruce, a new floor, and wallpaper removal/paint but once I started the project, I just went completely crazy and put everything I wanted to in the space.  It is my hideout away from the mess of the kiddo.  A place not only for me to do the endless laundry but to craft and sew, wrap presents etc.
Ahhh, a breath of fresh air!  I seriously hang out in this tiny room... I found all the art on etsy and had the roman blind custom made.  I had the same fabric so I re-upholstered a dining chair and spray painted it pink for a punch of whimsy.  My favorite parts of this room are the built in wallpaper racks and the re-purposed drop leaf dining table. I found the dining table and chair at a thrift store for $100 (I like to really dig).  Took some stripping, sanding, staining, and chopping up but it came out so pretty and functional in the end.  Well worth the effort!  My contractor, David, did all the hard stuff from putting together this built in wall of cabinets and table to the 6' wood paneling.  Oh! and my favorite stone is on the floor.  12x12 carrara marble tiles in a running bond pattern.

Huge thank you as usual to my wonderful contractor who takes my vision and improves it!  I love every inch of this room, so many details!!

Domenic's 2nd Birthday Party ~ Ombre Style! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/8/domenics-2nd-birthday-party-ombre-style Domenic's 2nd Birthday Bash!
8-23-2014 ~ Ombre Style

My baby is not a baby anymore!  He is officially a "big boy", my wild and energetic toddler.  Where has the time gone!?  When it comes to styled shoots, I will spend every waking minute pouring myself into the project for months.  When it comes to personal events like this, I wait until the last minute to find some sort of inspiration and then go crazy for about a week trying to pull it all together.  I may say something like "lets just do something simple this year" EVERY SINGLE HOLIDAY but then I'll stumble across a tiny idea like this blue ombre design and just explode.  My extra fabulous friend and fellow wedding professional, Candice, from the Best Little Cakehouse needed my inspiration for the cake.  So, I searched and searched until I found a ruffle cake with a faded color gradient.  Why isn't there more fab styling ideas out there for little boys!?  Candice told me no, absolutely no ruffles for my boy but suggested these fun dots instead.  Lucky for Domenic, I have Candice so he doesn't have to have ruffles ;)

Candice made the beautiful cake and cupcakes to match.  My friend, Jennifer from Two Little Hoots Boutique created his adorable T shirt in record timing!  I got to crafting right away.  First stop is always Joann Fabrics.  You can create anything with a couple yards of fabric!  Table cloths and bunting are no sew, just a pair of scissors.  I found the rock candy at party city along with the balloons.  The bird houses were used as centerpieces to hold the balloons in place; bottle of spray paint and they matched.  My favorite craft was the giant "D".  Two colors of yarn and I just wrapped and wrapped... and wrapped... around a giant paper mache crafting letter.

Kids don't care about this stuff... if you are going to style a toddler's party, do it for yourself haha.  They much more enjoyed the bounce house, playroom, and pool.  They did eat their cupcakes in the space and we sang Happy Birthday to Domenic with a pretty setup for pictures.

Macaroni & Cheese Muffins!  See below for the recipe that my Mom found... They went fast!!

Happy Birthday, Domenic!  I plan to create pretty parties for you until you don't want me to anymore...

Lindsay + Vinny ~ Hitched! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/8/lindsay-vinny-hitched Lindsay + Vinny

As I look back over these images, I'm reminded at how completely wonderful these two people are.  I LOVE Lindsay and Vinny, they are just warm and wonderful, always worrying about the people around them like if I'm eating dinner, taking a break, or trying the cake hehe.  Thank you guys so much for having me be part of your big day!  Boy did we luck out with Florida August weather.  We tried to beat the heat and do the portraits later in the day, which was a fabulous idea considering the temperature but the storms started coming in during the reception and I was worried we wouldn't get back out there.  I think I'm just one lucky duck because the skies opened for our entire portrait session and then a HUGE thunder storm rolled in at the end giving us the coolest backdrop ever!  My favorite for this wedding is going to have to be Lindsay's baby bump <3... Coming in close second is the crazy amazing candy table!

I'm so excited for you both, your adventure is just beginning!  Congratulations to Lindsay and Vincent!

Styled Shoot! Up The Creek Farms, Valkaria FL https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/8/styled-shoot-up-the-creek-farms Up the Creek Farms Styled Shoot!

It is my absolute pleasure to present to you a brand new venue in Florida!  A wedding photographer's dream!! Up the Creek Farms is a one of a kind, gorgeous property in Valkaria just 20 min. south of downtown Melbourne.  Jessica, the owner, has turned her childhood home into a charming bed and breakfast for bridal parties.  She has also built a 6,000 sq ft (air conditioned!) barn on her amazing hilly terrain that overlooks a sea of spanish moss draped oak trees and a winding stream.  Jessica has a vintage/antique rentals business right there for you to pick through including everything from furniture to table linens and props!

I was so excited to work with this team and create something truly beautiful.  Patti from Buds Etc. brought my vision to a whole new level with her lavish table spread of fresh florals.  Candice's lacy cake is a dream.  That light pink is perfection and we all loved tasting Flour & Spice's macaroons, yum!!  This was my first time working with Julia from After a While Crocodile and I am SO impressed with her attention to detail!  I LOVED her signage and invitation suite.  Don't you just adore the bride and groom signs on their feminine and masculine appropriate chairs!?  The team wouldn't be complete without Joanna from In2YourBeauty Makeup Artistry.  She not only worked her magic with makeup but helped out like crazy throughout the shoot.

Danae and Matt were wonderful models!  The dress was a treasure of a find on Etsy from the 1930s and fit Danae like a glove.  She was born to wear lace with that gorgeous long blond hair!!

Brittany + Vincent ~ Hitched! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/8/brittany-vincent-hitched Brittany & Vincent

I LOVED this wedding!  Brazilian music and sunglasses made for a super fun party.  And we got SO incredibly lucky with the weather!  It was a harsh sunlight kind of day and a cloud and strong breeze rolled in just for their ceremony.  Cloud cover permanently came in again when we started their bridal portraits leaving a gorgeous sky and diffused light for the full hour that they gave me.  We were relaxed during that hour which turned into the most shots I've ever gotten during bride and groom portrait time!  Thank you for that hour!!  Brittany picked some fabulous vendors to carry out her pretty pink and light blue color combo.  Patti from Buds Etc. is always amazing.  Her attention to detail and arrangements are just stunning.  I love working with her, she is just the sweetest person!  Linda Lee from Cakes So Simple outdid herself with this huge dessert table featuring a cake topped with bobble heads of the bride and groom.  DJ Shane is a true master, he got that party up and dancing from start to finish.

I have two favorite moments... Brittany asked me to take a picture of her in her wedding dress prior to the wedding so that we could have a printed picture of her holding a "Still Your Little Girl" sign as a gift to her father.  When she gave him the present after their father/daughter dance, he was emotional and it melted everyone <3  The bouquet toss was also fun.  Brittany has some inner super hero strength.  She tossed that bouquet into a light (those things are high up) and knocked the shade off!

Brittany and Vincent, I wish you both the very best in your new lives together!! Thank you for allowing me to document your special memories, congratulations!!!

HLP Summer MINI Styled Shoot! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/7/hlp-summer-mini-styled-shoot The Water Shoot

I find so much inspiration in dishes!  I styled this entire shoot around a platter and teacups set I found in my attic (Perks to a short sale, there was so much stuff up there!!)... A navy blue and white floral pattern was all I needed to spark this nautical look.  Anytime I get the opportunity to shoot near water, I take it, but this time I decided to shoot IN the water.  We were knee deep the entire time including all the furniture.  Alyssa and Josh, my wonderful models, were so relaxed and go with the flow.  They got very wet at the end (which I feel was totally worth it, see below).  I love meeting new vendors and seeing their vision for the project!  Julie Miner of Julie Miner Events put together these gorgeous flowers.  How beautiful are pink and blue together!?  We weren't expecting all this sunlight during the shoot but everything sparkled on the water and it just worked out in our favor.  Ashley of Styling by Ashley Rae  did Alyssa's hair in these romantic curls <3  and Candice of Best Little Cakehouse created this adorable blue stripe cake.  Alyssa's dress was put together in pieces by me.  I found the sequin pink tube top in a vintage store on Etsy and put together the skirt for under $20 in tulle.  A day before the shoot I found some last minute inspiration in my own outfit and chopped up my Old Navy shirt to recover some old chairs.  I didn't want that shirt anyway ;)  Just Invite Me created these gorgeous invitations to top it all off...

Can you imagine an evening reception with your toes in the water? Low sun romance... We started to lose the sun so heck with the outfits!  Oh my gosh soooo hot!

Jennifer + Nick ~ E-Sesh! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/7/jennifer-nick-e-sesh Jennifer + Nick
Engagement Session!

Let me tell you how much I love my clients... I LOVE MY CLIENTS.  These two sweeties drove a few hours to do their engagement shoot with me (that makes me feel so special <3)!  It had been raining here every day for over two weeks and cleared for their evening.  Every day after, rain.  I am convinced that it was meant to be.  They were so incredibly patient, I think we must have shot for 2 hours total in two locations.  Jennifer said a couple times "this is fun!".  Music to my ears.  I love Jennifer's color choices.  That turquoise top is darling and her maxi dress on the beach was the perfect color/style combo.  I can't wait to shoot their wedding in Jacksonville!!  They are so in love.  I know it immediately when posing people.  It's this ease and constant happy face.  You'll see...

I usually call the dip "the finale shot" and I think they had been practicing because they were clearly masters. ;) ...But we went on to do a finale to the finale shot... I love it when couples are easy going and want to experiment/let me play with light.  So glad the weather held out.  The clouds were definitely rolling in around us.  I actually think I see rain in the lower clouds!!

Fourth of July Styling https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/7/fourth-of-july-styling Fourth of July
Styling, Americana!

I had out of town guests staying with me this year from Kentucky.  They are about as America as you can get so I really wanted to do something that catered toward them.  I immediately thought, traditional backyard BBQ but pumped up with a whole lotta pretty ;)  My backyard overlooks a lake, is draped in a canopy of live oaks, and is surrounded by a white picket fence.  I love this little shady evening spot so I had the boys drag out all the furniture.  It rained and rained HARD, I'm glad to have these pics before we had to relocate!

I found the drop leaf table and chairs at a thrift shop and recovered the main chair in a red, white, and blue checker.  It is super funky!  The rest of the table furnishings are a collection of picnic inspired pieces.  The dishes I found on overstock.  I can't pass on a scalloped edge!  The centerpieces are comprised of 30 apples and 3 grocery store floral arrangements.  The mini sliders were a big hit but that pie table was probably my favorite.  Mmmmmm pie.  Happy 4th!

Underwater Photography Tips Part I https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/7/underwater-photography-tips-part-i Underwater Tips & Tricks Part I
Gear and Getting Started

I get asked often about my approach to underwater photography so I've decided to share some tips and tricks in a series of blog posts!  I hope you will find this information useful but know that there is no ONE WAY to shoot.... ANYTHING.  My best advice is to do your research and just get out there and experiment.  Find inspiration within yourself and allow for original creative output.

In this blog post I want to talk about gear and setup.  If you think underwater photography or photography gear in general is too expensive to get into, I beg you to read on.  First and foremost I want to stress that camera gear only goes so far.  Knowing how to use your camera and executing creative vision is 99% of this gig.  You might be surprised that I use a 10 year old Canon XT and an 18-55mm kit lens for all of my underwater photography.  It is the lowest of the low in terms of DSLR equipment but if you know how to use it, you can produce crisp, clear, beautiful pictures with just that!  When my friends ask me for a camera recommendation, I definitely tell them to get a base model for their first camera and shoot only in manual mode.  Your camera is dumb dumb dumb.  It doesn't know what you are trying to capture especially in an underwater environment.

I could write a novel on DSLR underwater housing.  I personally use the Dicapac Waterproof Case, a $60 plastic bag!  My complaints about the Dicapac are that it floats even with all the air sucked out and it's hard to keep the lens in just the right place within the lens ring.  It takes a whole bunch of practice and maneuvering but when held just right, it works great!  I also tied a 2 lb weight to the bottom of the bag to help me take it deeper underwater.  My friends on G+ have given the Ewa Marine, which sells for about $400, similar reviews.  You can fit a strobe in the Ewa Marine but who wants to shoot with an on camera flash!?  Try using your built in flash first for a similar effect or if you don't have a built in flash, add strobes to the deck and light from above!  I generally shoot underwater in full sun so I can capture the reflection on the water surface from below.  Overcast or evening light will give you less water ripple effects on skin. You could of course definitely splurge and go full pro housing for about $1500-3000!

I rented the highest level underwater point & shoot from a friend when I first got started.  The Canon Powershot D10 is lightweight and easy to use.  It's also completely automatic (boo).  I had to get this close to the camera to produce a semi clear image.  You can see that it's pretty grainy.

Using a DSLR instead of a point & shoot underwater gives you so much more ability.  The images are clear and you can shoot in RAW which is crazy important underwater.  The two images below demonstrate color balance underwater.  Everything is very blue.  Since it is a RAW file, I was able change the color temperature in Lightroom easily.

The scene is also fun to play with.  In this first picture, I shot Hannah in my pool and you can see the visible tile line.  In the next photos, I experimented with a black backdrop and loved the outcome!  My secret to an underwater backdrop is felt!  I get 5-6 yards of black felt, submerge it underwater, and weigh it down with brick pavers both on the pool floor and deck.  Stretch it fairly tight so you won't see the wrinkles from water movement.

One last tip for this post... get yourself some snorkel gear.  You don't want to hold your breath while waiting for the perfect shot.  I generally setup my shot, take a test shot, set myself up underwater and then make a noise through my snorkel to let my model know that I'm ready.

That's it for today's tips!  I hope you enjoyed it and look forward to connecting with you here or on my facebook page in the future!!  Feel free to ask questions in the comment area! :D

Ana + Dan ~ Hitched! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/7/ana-dan-hitched Ana + Dan

I had been excited to shoot this classic wedding in Orlando for a long time!  Ana and Dan are super sweet people who were patient enough to spend two hours with me for their engagement session.  I couldn't wait to work with them again and capture more of their sweetness.  Every wedding has its stand outs for me and I think out of all the amazing classic details that Ana chose, the music was simply outstanding.  As a musician, I've been lucky enough to hear my fair share of beautiful live music.  I got chills when Ana walked down the aisle to Ave Maria.  The acoustics in that space were breathtaking!  And the live band at the reception was just fantastic!! The church was gorgeous, rich with history and beautiful culture.  So glad I brought Taylor along to 2nd shoot.  It's a huge space and the rules kept us tied to two locations within the church.  I will be sad to lose my favorite 2nd shooter soon!!
Ana was so thoughtful and tried to feed us throughout the day.   I almost broke my diet for that cake!!  From now on, I am neglecting any diet and tasting all cakes so that I can have a real opinion on vendors for my future brides.  It's the right thing to do!! :P
Thank you Ana and Dan for allowing us to capture your special day, we had so much fun!!

Blueberry Picking! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/6/blueberry-picking Blueberry Picking ~ Mims, FL

The Holland Family Blueberry Farm in Mims is so beautiful.  Very much worth the drive if you have an interest!  Domenic LOVED to pick/eat the berries and explore the never ending fields.  He quickly figured out which ones were ripe and picked us a whole bucket!  I am told that the farm is hosting their 2nd wedding there soon; possible new venue?!  So exciting!!

Album Comparison! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/6/albums Are you considering purchasing an album after your wedding?  See my comparison between two different level professional albums and a generic online order album before you make your purchase!  Why get an album in today's online world?  Don't let your investment sit on a flash drive in a drawer.  Professional images look even more amazing in print!  Your friends and family will enjoy them for generations to come when they are printed on archival paper.  They should be preserved and not lost or discolored/faded with time.  You really do have to see them in person to get the full effect, but I did my best to show the importance of a professionally printed album.  Check out the print comparison I also did here: The Print Project

1. The HLP Custom Hard Cover Album
This album is custom designed by me.  100 pages of thick archival paper that lays flat for a panorama view.  The paper makes the book feel substantial.  The paper is smooth and flawless to really showcase your images.  The cover is embossed leather but also can come in many custom leather colors.  Choose rounded or square corner pages!  It's the kind of book that you want to leave on out on your table.  It says, open me!!

2. The HLP Budget Friendly Professional Album!
This album is also printed on archival print paper, opens like a bound book and is put together directly by you through your online gallery.  Super easy to put together through set templates and drag/drop tools.  This book is finished with a fun photo cover.  Perfect for anyone on a budget and great for gifts!  The paper isn't as thick as the custom album but it will still preserve your memories in detail.

3.  The Online Ordered Generic Album
I ordered this sample from MixBook to get an idea of what was out there.   I had already seen Snapfish's version.  It was such poor quality that I instantly threw it in the trash.  The colors were over saturated, the pictures were lacking clarity, and the paper was wrinkly.  The difference between a professional album and a generic online ordered album is literally night and day.  You have to see it for yourself.  Why not?   You can order a snapfish album for $20!  The Mixbook album was the most expensive online album I could find at $65 on sale.  The pictures are again lacking clarity, color correction, and the book cover is already ripping.  Take a look at how thin it is!  The photo paper is very lightweight.  When you open the book, the binding makes cheap cracking sounds.  I'm most interested in fade over time.  For a longer experiment, I'll have to keep it in a closet and open it back up in a few years.

Check out my print comparison experiment also!  Preserve your art!

Domenic's Disney Adventure Part II https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/6/domenics-disney-adventure-part-ii Epcot!

I love this park, the world showcase never gets old.  We were lucky to grab the Florida three day pass this year so for our second trip, we chose Epcot!  If you missed the Magic Kingdom (Part I) post, you can find it here: Magic Kingdom Post. I thought it would be more Domenic's speed without the MK crowd but the attractions are so spread apart, it was hard to get him moving.  He also did much better with the rides at MK.

We started out at "the globe" and of course the classic tourist shot ;)  Let the learning adventure begin!

Innoventions has some fun picture taking areas inside.  AND AIR CONDITIONING!! Nemo ride!!  I thought D would love this area.  He points out fish and calls them "ish ish".  He was a little bit afraid of the big aquarium and darkness of the ride.  I had this particular shot in front of a big tank all planned out in my very scheduled mind and he just wanted to be held the whole time.  He constantly teaches me how to be his Mommy and just relax. Worn out!  I love baby hands when they are asleep.  Just a little hot pocket of pudge and sweetness. The restaurants in the world showcase have some seriously amazing windows.  I would shoot an engagement session at Epcot during a slow evening ANY DAY.  I've said that before... several times... SOMEONE HELP ME OUT!!! Digging for that last fry! Italy!  My favorite <3 Water break in the shade... Helping the staff by watering their plants. Drumming away!  If there's a noise maker nearby, D will find it.  Mexico!!  This is my other favorite (they're all my favorite).  Tricky lighting in here.  Lots of flashes going off, I wish I could have used mine!   An exercise in high ISO and creative light scouting... Fiesta ride!  So much like "It's a Small World" in decor.  D was all about this ride, "Wowwwww".  He whispers all his exclamations.  I'm always amazed by the scale of the constructed park backdrops. The end of the day Mama special, ice cream :P  Or, "here! eat this so you will be distracted all the way back to the car."

Goodson Master Suite Renovation https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/5/goodson-master-suite-renovation Master Suite Renovation

I'm so excited to share this with you, our first major project is finally complete!  From floor to ceiling, every square inch of this space was given a major face lift.  When we first walked through the house two years ago, (wow I can't believe it's been that long) I took these snap shots so I could remember what it looked like.  What I saw was hidden potential.  Details like the tray ceiling and crown molding and a floor plan that I could work with.  My favorite part about this room is that it's on the second floor and opens out to a large private deck which overlooks the backyard, pool, and lake.  The sunrises in the morning are spectacular!!  You can see the dated decor in the bathroom but what you can't see is the condition.  The walls and ceiling had to get a full bleaching before I could prime and paint.

Here is the before from two years ago:

Did you notice that there was a fireplace in the room!?  You can't find that in Florida!!

We waited nearly 10 months under contract before we got our keys.  So I had major plans all drawn out for every room already :P  About 30 min. into owning it, I was ripping up the carpet with my Dad and tearing out any evidence that brass ever existed.  My husband and I did this super easy DIY wainscotting or "picture frame molding" in the first couple weeks.  The grey paint is the product of too many color samples to count!  I finally decided on Valspar's Oatland's Subtle Taupe and ran it throughout the house.  I wanted a color that was clean, fresh, and just enough to highlight all the decorative woodwork. Shopping:  I splurge on major pieces like furniture and tile, the stuff that doesn't easily get changed.  I am a bargain hunter like no other when it comes to accessories.  If I find something that I JUST HAVE TO HAVE OR ELSE I'LL DIE, I'll buy it but that's super rare.  You'll generally find me spray painting an old piece of decor back to life and sewing my own curtains, pillows, and blankets.  I love warehouse sized thrift markets where I can hunt for treasure!

Close up of the fireplace... I peeled the gold flourishes off and gave it a heavy 10 coats of semi gloss white paint to make it look as though it's built into the rest of the woodwork.  The penny tile is carrara marble, my favorite stone on the planet.  I simply spray painted the gold metal trim on the glass doors with "high heat spray paint".

This chair was a flee market bargain at $40.  I found discounted fabric at $20 for 3 yards!  The trick to finding a reupholstery project that isn't too overwhelming (for those of us that aren't advanced reupholstery-ers) is to look for pieces that have pop off sections, no sewing required.  A simple unscrew seat and back, stretch fabric, and staple.  Sand and spray paint the wood, replace the pieces, and boom, 20 min. project. This deck is our next project.  Anybody a garden bug that can help me put together some planters!?

The bathroom!!! GREEN NO MORE.  Ok, it wasn't JUST outdated, it wasn't functional.  There was no shower floor, or working bathtub so we had to run down the hall to use baby Domenic's bath for a year and a half.  We carried the marble through the whole suite in different tile shapes.  The whole bathroom was designed around a 3" hexagon tile which I found online and had shipped from California.  I used it on the shower floor and had so much extra that we carried it to the tub deck too.  A smaller version of the hex tile was used as the accent border tile in the shower. We carried the picture frame molding into the bathroom by using it on the tub front.  The chandelier over the tub was all my contractor's idea and I LOVE it!!!  The only things I kept in this room were the mirror and cabinets.  Although, both of those got a major update as well.  I sanded and painted the cabinets and my contractor framed in the mirror to make it look nice and chunky! I kept the existing cabinets because they were solid wood and already the perfect layout.  This is my makeup area.  I have space and drawers to hide all of my clutter!!!  The makeup bench was another flee market find.  An antique piano bench that just needed a new cushion and fabric top.  It is insanely comfy, don't skimp on the cushioning!  ;) I have a really hard time shopping for art.  The pieces that I like are generally out of my price range and I want something one of a kind.  I have had great luck recently on etsy finding original pieces.  I matte and frame them myself which saves me a bundle.  I like to go smaller with the art and bigger with the matte and framing.  Original water color: KLewisIllustration

Phew!  I can't believe we are finished with this space!  I'll post more updates as we work through the house so watch out for new posts on my facebook page!

HLP Summer Styled Shoot 2014! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/5/hlp-summer-styled-shoot-2014 The Paper Shoot

The inspiration behind this styled shoot was a super fun/modern black Betsy Johnson dress.  Today you can wear just about any color you want and we have certainly been seeing a trend in brides wanting to wear fabulous, non traditional gowns.  With the dress in mind, we decided to go glam with pops of gold on top of a chic white and black color palette. The list of vendors who put their creative efforts toward this shoot is outstanding.  I can't thank my wonderful friends and fellow professionals enough for contributing!  Lorena of Zamora Hair Design came quite a distance to create this gorgeous up do and paired with Joanna from In 2 Your Beauty Makeup Artistry, you can't go wrong!  Joanna had this idea to airbrush lace on Angel's skin which turned out awesome.  Angel's eye makeup has this punch of gold that make her eyes pop. We called it the Paper Shoot because what started out as a simple floral paper wall turned into this 10' paper monster that inspired other pieces of the puzzle.  The paper wall is comprised of over 100 pieces of hand folded scrapbook paper which Candice from Best Little Cake House, added to her three tier masterpiece!  She told me that the middle tier took an entire evening to create, it's gorgeous!!  Angel's bouquet is a mixture of hand created paper/crepe flowers.  Mazziflowers on etsy sent the peonies all the way from Poland and they are incredibly detailed!  If you like glitter, glam, and tons of details, you have to also check out Just Invite Me on etsy.  This invitation suite is killer!  I think one of my favorite things is setting a table.  Sounds silly, but it's true!  I love all the sparkly silverware, shiny glass, and inviting individual settings that make a guest feel special.

Domenic's First Disney Adventure! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/5/domenics-first-disney-adventure Domenic visits the Mouse House...

I've been dying to take D to Magic Kingdom since before he was born.  I have that rare adult love (disorder?) for all things Disney.  It was magic when I was a kid and it's blow-your-mind magic when you get to see it again through your child's eyes!  We didn't get to stay long, Domenic is still very little.  Keeping up with his napping and eating schedule (the entire fridge every hour) is... tough.  Luckily Grandpa wanted to come along so I had help :)  Thank goodness for Grandpa.  He never complains and actually encourages me to bring my camera so that I can play too.

Had to start out with the infamous "tourists at Cinderella Castle" photo:

Gotta love that "RaRaw" (Domenic's name for his beloved Grandpa).

I think I shed a tear on the very first ride... Small World!  His little face and the pointing.  Such wonder as he had never seen anything like it before!

We tried to do the Winnie the Pooh ride and he was pretty excited after Small World but it broke right when we got on.  Cute picture taking area right outside of the exit though ;)

I thought the carousel would be a safe bet but it's actually quite scary.  I didn't like the one strap hold the baby deal and neither did he haha...

Swiss Family Tree House was completely packed, single file.  Terrible idea to take your slow, I want to do it myself, Toddler.  Excellent photo adventure if you don't mind being THAT person and holding up the line...

One of my all time favorite rides, the people movers!!! D did not like it when it went completely black.  I lit his face with a camera phone and he looked very wide eyed!!

I think he was happy to leave this one:

I had one photo in mind when I went, the tea cups.  He is just like me, loves to spin around and around.

Had to have Mickey Mouse ice cream!  It's just downright undisney if you don't! :P

He was falling asleep in his stroller at this point so we took the tram back to the car.  Suddenly the sky opened and it FL monsooned all the way back.  We were drenched.  Yay for water proof lined diaper bags.  My camera was bone dry! and so were the diapers...

I was worried that bringing my camera would be a pain to keep up with or not allow me to be in the moment with Domenic but at the end of the day, I get to share the experience with family and friends and have these memories forever. <3

Chris + April ~ Hitched! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/5/jb Chris + April

April contacted me about her intimate backyard wedding all the way from Alaska back in January.  Yes, she planned this beautiful wedding in a matter of months from Alaska!!  I knew that it was going to be super sweet from the start.  I got the hint of personality via email and I was totally right.  They cut their cake with a sword, enough said :D  I LOVE backyard weddings especially with tons of cute details!!  April told me that they had the arbor built just for the occasion and that the vine connected at the top days before the ceremony.  I think my favorite detail was the bridal shoes, sparkly white Toms!  I am in love with the lavender and baby's breath bouquet and lantern/mason jar centerpieces.  I also LOVE receptions where I can just go wild with lighting; sunset + twinkly lights = recipe for eye candy.  The people are what made this event for me though.  I received the sweetest, most thoughtful feedback from their family and friends.  Just an incredibly rewarding experience.  Thank you both so much for allowing me to capture your very special day.  I wish you eons of happiness!! <3

Styled Farm Portrait Session! https://hlgstudio.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/4/styled-farm-portrait-session This was maybe one of my most favorite shoots ever!  Possibly because it's of my very best friend <3  It would be impossible to capture her true loveliness with a camera, but one can try!  All styling was done with things I already had in my closet, we just added a few bunches of baby's breath from the local grocery store.  This farm looking location would be amazing for an engagement shoot.  It certainly kept her smiling with all the "moo" cow ambience ;)
